BankAtlantic provided consumer and business banking services to communities throughout the state of Florida.  Through a carefully considered growth strategy, BankAtlantic, at its highest point, grew its banking franchise to over 100 branches, over $6.5 billion in total assets, and more than 3,000 employees. Anchored by a strong executive management team since its acquisition in 1984, BankAtlantic grew steadily, primarily through organic growth and via select acquisitions, and became one of the largest financial institutions headquartered in Florida. BankAtlantic sold its bank operations to North Carolina-based BB&T for a 10 percent deposit premium plus BankAtlantic’s net worth (an approximate $300 million premium plus an approximate $300 million net worth, or approximately $600 million in total).
